Freestanding bathtubs instantly make a bathroom feel more luxurious and spa like, but many people think they can be difficult to install. However, that is not the case, and plumbing a freestanding bath requires no more effort than a regular bath. The main difference is the pipe work isn’t concealed and instead is adapted as a design feature.
Whether you opt for a contemporary or traditional design, a freestanding tub is sure to be the star of your bathroom and make a great impact on the overall look and feel of the space. So, if you’re considering getting on board with this style staple, but want to know what the fitting process entails, we’re here to help.
The Fitting Process
When you begin the process of installing a freestanding bath, you need to ensure your flooring is level, so your bath is even against the surface. Some bathtubs have adjustable feet, but it’s best to ensure an even surface for the fitting of all bathroom products. As well as checking the surface level, you need to check the maximum weight your floor can hold and remember to calculate the weight of the bathtub with water in too!
Plumbing a Freestanding Bath
If you are changing the position of your old bathtub, it may be that you need to re-route the pipes, and if you have opted for a freestanding bath mixer, you will need to make sure it is marked to be fitted within the correct distance from the bath.
Remember to turn the water supply off before beginning any work and seek a professional plumber to complete the job safely and effectively. Your plumber will talk you through all the necessary pipe work that is needed.
Once all of the necessary work has been completed, your plumber will either secure the feet to the floor, or if your bath is flush to the floor, they will add silicone beading to the edges. This will ensure your bath stays in the best condition and as clean as possible. The silicone beading will then take 24 hours to set and dry before you can dive in to relax in your new tub!
How Long Will the Installation Take?
Usually, the installation of a freestanding bath will take around two days. This will all depend on the type of freestanding bath you choose, the layout of your bathroom and if any problems are discovered along the way. It’s best to have alternative washing arrangements if this is the only wash area in your home. Although the process is simple, plumbing jobs have been known to take longer than initially anticipated due to pipe issues, uneven flooring or even rotting floorboards that might be discovered along the way. We don’t want to scare you, it’s just a pre-warning if you don’t know the conditions that lie beneath your current bathroom.
