An emotional escape room is a room where you can escape from certain unwanted emotions. It is a room where you can unload stress, decompress, meditate, and simply relax - a little self-care spot.

While the term “Emotional Escape Room” may sound quite dramatic at first, this interior design trend given prominence by Pinterest makes a lot of sense. Now more than ever are people looking for a place where they can unwind and boost their overall wellbeing in the comfort of their own home.

Emotional escape rooms come in different forms, but what better room to transform into your very own wellness sanctuary than your bathroom? Here are some tips to help you design your emotional escape room.

Choose a calming colour scheme
To create a relaxing space you certainly don’t have to avoid colour. Some colours are even said to have a soothing and calming effect. Green, for example, is a colour that symbolises tranquillity, harmony, and balance, so would be a good choice. Another option would be to incorporate pastel shades. The most popular pastels at the moment are millennial pink, pistachio green, soft light blue, and lavender.

Rather than adding too much colour, we’d recommend either a feature wall with coloured tiles, half-painted green or pastel walls, or you can simply accessorise the bathroom with your favourite colour option. If you prefer not to add any colour, whites and earthy neutral colours would also make for a very serene bathroom.

Add mood lighting
Different layers of light will allow you to switch between bright, functional lighting and more subtle ambient lighting for a relaxing mood. We’d recommend separate circuits so you can choose to only turn on your mood lights or you can set the scene with dimmable lights.

Adding a touch of chromotherapy with colour changing LED lighting is another affordable and effective way to create a versatile space that can change along with your mood.

Think minimalist
It will be extremely difficult to escape the chaos of life in the middle of a cluttered mess, so make sure you keep your bathroom organised and clutter free.

Decluttering and creating a sense of openness are what minimalist bathrooms are all about.  Avoid cramming too much into the room and allow for open space where possible, so the bathroom feels clean, fresh and peaceful. Remember that it’s important to establish what is right for the room rather than having the biggest bath, shower or basin, and make sure you have some hidden storage available so you only have some essentials and decorative items on display. Recessed mirrored cabinets are increasingly popular, particularly those that are illuminated.

Warm up your bathroom
Warmth can be added to a room through colour, but another simple yet luxurious way to warm up your bathroom is by including underfloor heating. Underfloor heating is especially comforting during the winter months, but if you choose a programmable underfloor heating solution you can control when you would like this turned on or off.

Aside from underfloor heating, an accompanying heated towel rail cannot be missed. Heated towel rails will help heat up a room, dry your towels quicker, and give you warm towels as a bonus.

Go all out with a steam room
While having a steam room in your bathroom is not a must, it certainly offers the ultimate home spa experience. Steam rooms offer several health benefits, and the overall space and cost that is required is smaller than most think. It is important to select a good quality steam generator with appropriate controls and an experienced installer to make sure everything is installed properly.

Accessorise the room with plants
Nature has a positive impact on our mental health and brings a lot of positive emotions such as peacefulness, joy and creativity. Styling your bathroom with plants helps you create a tranquil spa-like environment and offers health and wellness benefits such as reducing stress levels and improving air quality. So, plants really can’t be missed in your emotional escape room!

Use mood lifting and relaxing scents
The scents of essential oils like lavender, clary sage, lemon, sandalwood and ylang ylang can be a natural remedy for stress relief and other health benefits.

Essential oils can be inhaled by using a diffuser or humidifier, you can light a candle with an essential oil scent, or you can add a few drops to a hot bath. Essential oils are highly concentrated, so you should always be cautious when applying them directly onto your skin, and it is important to follow any specific instructions for each oil you try.

Now, some final touches like putting on some relaxing music and perhaps pouring yourself a glass of herbal tea (or wine), and you’re ready to de-stress and release any negative energy in your very own emotional escape room.
